Why This Recipe Is So Delicious
Cooking Hints
- Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free spot for a fluffier loaf.
- Brush the top with a little honey glaze after baking for a shiny, sweet finish.
Step 1
In a large bowl, whisk together the water, milk, brown sugar, honey, and 1/4 cup of vegetable oil. Add both the whole wheat and all-purpose flours, yeast, and salt, then stir until the dough starts to come together. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead until the dough feels smooth and elastic.
Step 2
Lightly oil a clean bowl with about a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Place your dough inside and turn it around so it’s coated with the oil. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, which usually takes about an hour.
Step 3
When the dough has risen, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Punch down the dough to release the air, then knead it a few times. Divide the dough in half and shape each piece into a loaf.
Step 4
Place the loaves into greased 9x5-inch loaf pans. Cover them again and let them rise until they puff up about an inch above the pans—this should take around 30 minutes.
Step 5
Bake the loaves for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they’re golden brown on top. Let them cool a bit before slicing and serving.
