Helpful Kitchen Tips
- Keep the brine and turkey refrigerated during the soaking process to prevent bacterial growth.
- Rinse the turkey well after brining to remove excess salt and avoid an overly salty flavor.
Step 1
Heat 2 1/2 cups of water and the salt in a small saucepan. Keep stirring as it comes to a boil, and let it go for about 3 minutes until the salt completely dissolves. Pour this salty water into a 5-gallon bucket, then add another gallon of plain water to it.
Step 2
Take another 2 1/2 cups of water and the brown sugar, and heat them together in the saucepan. Stir constantly until the sugar melts and the mixture boils, about 3 minutes. Pour this sweet liquid into the bucket as well.
Step 3
Add the apple juice, whiskey, and lemon juice to the bucket, giving everything a good stir. Toss in the chopped apple, then squeeze in some fresh orange juice and add the orange rinds. Mix it all together, and your brine is ready to go!
