Why This Recipe Is So Delicious
Helpful Cooking Tips
- Sauté the onions until they are soft and caramelized for maximum sweetness.
- Stir the sauce frequently to prevent burning and to blend the flavors well.
Step 1
Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat, turning it now and then until it’s nicely browned, which should take about 10 minutes. Once the bacon is done, add the onions to the pan and turn the heat down to medium-low. Let the onions cook slowly until they’re really soft and almost falling apart, about 7 to 10 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook just until you can smell its aroma, roughly a minute.
Step 2
Pour in the ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, liquid smoke, hot sauce, and a good pinch of black pepper. Give everything a good stir to combine. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then cover the pan and let it cook for about 15 minutes so all the flavors can meld together.
